Interweaving the stories of three survivors - the captain, the ship's doctor, and a young marine - journalist Doug Stanton has brought this astonishing human drama to life in a narrative that is at once immediate and timeless. The captain's subsequent court-martial left many questions unanswered: How did the navy fail to realize the Indianapolis was missing? Why was the cruiser traveling unescorted in enemy waters? And, perhaps most amazing of all, how did these 317 men manage to survive?

By the time rescue arrived, all but 317 men had died. Battered by a savage sea, they struggled to stay alive, fighting off sharks, hypothermia, and dementia. An estimated 300 men were killed upon impact close to 900 sailors were cast into the Pacific Ocean, where they remained undetected by the navy for nearly four days and nights. On July 30, 1945, the USS Indianapolis was torpedoed in the South Pacific by a Japanese submarine. Winner, 2017 APA Audie Awards - History/BiographyĪ harrowing, adrenaline-charged account of America's worst naval disaster - and of the heroism of the men who, against all odds, survived. Everything worked out because it took courage to fight for life even when things looked bad.Earphones Award Winner ( AudioFile Magazine) I just I have watched too many cop shows. I also did not understand why Monica's father's car was not inspected before he got in it. It seams like no one thought about how a tracker could be on or in something.

I was most surprised of how the FBI handled "safe housing". This was a perfect opportunity to share her faith. She never put Evan down for not being sure of his beliefs. I really liked how Monica was not going to give up her Christian beliefs to have a person in her life. Evan fell for Monica as soon as he saw her. It is funny how you learn a jingle and it sticks with you. Events happened to convince her that her life was in serious danger. It took her a while to really listen to what the FBI agent, Evan Cooper, was saying. When Monica's dad tried to contact her after years apart, she wouldn't return his calls. It took a while for the heroine to understand what it meant to be a family member of a political appointee.

It is so good to have Christian mysteries.
